Winter Maintenance for Fishing Gear (Spinning & Casting)

Winter is a great time for spin anglers to get their gear ready for spring. Taking care of your equipment during quiet winter evenings is far more relaxing than rushing it right before your first trip. Replacing lines and hooks, stocking up on terminal tackle, and planning your upcoming fishing adventures is excellent therapy for those winter fishing withdrawals!

Line Replacement

Replacement intervals depend on usage, but active trollers usually change lines at least every other year – or more often if the spool gets low. For spinning anglers using braided line, the interval can be longer, but it's still important to inspect the line regularly while fishing.

On spinning reels, always snip off a few meters of line just above the leader after a few trips. This section wears out the most during casting, right above the leader knot.

Hook Replacement

Swapping out hooks on a larger scale is best done during the winter too. Don't fish with dull or rusty hooks during the season – always replace them when needed. Sharp hooks are the only real option if you want the fish to stay hooked all the way to the boat!

Chemically sharpened hooks are today’s top choice for crankbaits, spoons, trolling rigs, and jerkbaits. Split ring pliers are a must-have tool when changing hooks! Without them, the job can quickly become frustrating, especially with larger lures that have heavy-duty rings. It's a small investment that makes hook changes quick and easy every time.

Don’t trust that the fish will bite the lure with the new hooks – they won’t. Your record catch will absolutely strike the one with those old, rusty hooks! Find Happy Angler's full hook selection here.

Terminal Tackle for Spin Anglers

Leaders, snaps, swivels – you always need terminal tackle when fishing. Winter is the perfect time to restock your tackle box with the right amounts. A smart move is to get a dedicated box for them and stock up for the entire season. That way, you’ll avoid last-minute runs to the store when it's time to hit the water. Try it this winter and you’ll want to do it again next year!

These tips should help get you through the toughest part of the off-season, which always tests spin anglers during the frozen months. And don’t forget to replenish your lures and other gear too. Shop smart in winter – fish freely in spring!
