Baitrunner and Coarse Reels

Baitrunner and coarse reels are specifically designed for different types of angling. A Baitrunner or Free Spool reel has a special drag system that allows the spool to rotate with adjustable resistance, letting the fish take line when it bites. The Baitrunner reel is excellent for bottom fishing, feeder fishing, and live bait fishing. Reels designed specifically for match fishing often have a shallow spool, making it easier to cast accurately. In Happy Angler's selection, you'll now also find reels, rods, and sets designed for specimen fishing.

FAQ

How does a baitrunner reel work?

Baitrunner reels have a separate free-spool drag system that allows the spool to rotate with a chosen level of resistance. When you start turning the handle, the baitrunner function disengages during the first turn and the reel’s main fighting drag takes over.

Baitrunner reels are particularly useful for bottom fishing, for example when targeting carp, zander, eel or pike, as they allow the fish to take the bait and swim away without feeling significant resistance from the line.
