Stay Warm and Dry – Autumn Fishing Apparel

Anglers and outdoor enthusiasts don’t want to get wet—we want to stay dry on our adventures. Well-chosen clothing for autumn weather makes enjoying the great outdoors much easier, and light rain or gusts of wind won’t stop you from living in the moment.

Since the weather is one thing we can’t control, dressing appropriately is the key to enjoying the outdoors. Layering your clothing is the path to a warm, comfortable outdoor experience in the fall. Here’s a quick guide to layering.

Outer Layer – Protection from Water, Wind, and Snow

The purpose of the outer layer is to shield you from wind and rain. By choosing a waterproof and windproof jacket and pants that are also breathable, you can keep the layers underneath dry. Gore-Tex or similar shell materials are excellent choices for this top layer. For extra back protection, you can opt for high-waisted bib pants.

The outer layer's job is also to "breathe" out moisture from the inner layers.

  • Waterproof rating example: 15,000 mm/cm² = The suit will keep you dry in heavy rain combined with strong winds.
  • 10,000 mm/cm² = Pants will protect well against moderate rain and wet snow.
  • Breathability: 8,000 g/m²/24 hours = The higher the value, the better the clothing breathes from the inside out.
  • 5,000 g/m²/24 hours = This value means the pants breathe moderately but not as well as garments with higher breathability ratings.

Middle Layer: Airy and Warm

The job of the middle layer is to keep you warm. It’s a good idea to choose clothing that leaves space for air between the layers. The purpose of this layer is to provide insulation. Great options include fleece jackets or wool sweaters that provide excellent insulation and warmth. You can add more middle layers as needed. When you’re moving a lot, like during transitions, it’s a good idea to wear lighter middle layers to avoid sweating.

By choosing a sweater made from 100% natural material like merino wool, you ensure the best possible warmth. The fibers of merino wool trap warm air between your skin and the outer layer. Natural fibers also effectively transfer moisture away from the skin.

Base Layer: Designed to Wick Moisture from the Skin

This layer is closest to your skin, and its job is to move moisture away from your body. By choosing a base layer made of merino wool, for example, you ensure breathability and quick drying to keep your skin warm. Keep your skin dry by selecting the right thermal base layer for you here.

Protect the Extremities: Keep Your Hands, Feet, and Head Warm

Don’t forget warm and waterproof gloves, a hat, and a neck warmer. Good fishing boots or waterproof shoes that keep your feet dry and warm are also essential. In addition to a hat, it's important to protect your neck. Neck warmers and tube scarves are excellent options for this.

When choosing gloves for fishing, the most important factors are waterproofing, insulation, and grip. Waterproof and windproof gloves, like those with a Gore-Tex membrane, will keep your hands dry and warm. Choose gloves according to your needs. For example, for boat fishing, a good option is thin waterproof gloves for fishing, paired with larger mittens to pull over them for extra warmth during transitions and breaks.

When it comes to gloves, insulation (like a merino wool lining or Thinsulate) is essential in cold conditions. Along with insulation, good grip and durability are important to handle fishing gear. Versatile gloves, like mittens with removable finger covers, are particularly handy for fishing all year round.

Thermal boots are a great option for keeping your feet warm during autumn weather. Opting for slightly larger boots allows for an air pocket between the sock and the inner lining of the boot, preventing your feet from sweating and your socks from getting damp. Let’s all stay dry, warm, and enjoy fishing and the outdoors in any weather.
